After a successful 2017 season, Electric Island returns to its original location at Hanlan’s Point to close out the summer with a two day festival on September 3rd and 4th. Despite flooding issues which closed the Toronto Islands for the majority of the summer, Electric Island has still delivered a strong series of shows which took place at both Woodbine Park and the Portlands nearby. Yet at last, the showcase returns to the actual island for a fitting finale.
On Day 1, the main stage boasts a heavy deep house vibe featuring Sonny Fodera, Dusky, and Claude Von Stroke. These DJs feature friendlier sounds that are lighter on the ears with more vocals mixed in, definitely a good fit if you’re planning to bring out friends who don’t usually frequent the underground scene. For those in attendance that are “techno or go home”, Chris Liebing is thrown in the lineup to give them what they came for.
While the main stage is sure to be a party, those with a more experienced ear for music should definitely be seen around the second stage. Stage two features a massive line-up of Canadian talent that have since left the nest and made waves on the international market. Between Nitin, Gab Rhome, My Favourite Robot, and CRi; the combined musical IQ on this stage would be enough to form techno’s own version of MENSA. For those that put their priorities more towards the music and a bit less towards the party, stage two is definitely the place to be.
The second day boasts a very heavily anticipated range of artists both returning to the island as well as making their debut. Sven Vath and Dixon are island favourites after having both played on the island twice before, and make their return by popular demand. Expect nothing but insanity when either of these DJs step up to take the decks. Toronto is waiting with baited breath for the Black Madonna to finally make her debut after a cancelled show in Toronto over a year ago. Her classic house recipe and disco inspired melodies are going to rock the island back and forth, while Yotto from Anjunadeep will provide the perfect support and transition into her set. On stage 2 will be headliners Mall Grab and Soul Clap, whose sets are more like a house party with the DJs than anything else. Regardless of where you are on the island during this day, wear your runners because it’s going to be one massive dance party.
